Other Information

Photo 1 is an enlarged inset view from Photo 2.

Photo 2 (ca. 1960) was contributed by Chuck Desmond, who is the VP of the local museum.

The sign was painted on the north end of the Paso Robles' first jail built in 1889. The jail was used for about 20 years and then abandoned: it was torn down in 1965. The building has been re-created at the Pioneer Museum (photo 8) and there has been a Mail Pouch sign painted on the end of the jail as shown in the Photo.

Historic Aerials' imagery was used to determine the original location of the old jail. The jail was demolished in 1965 and in Historic Aerials' imagery dated 1957 the jail is clearly visible. The distance measurement tool was used to determine the decimal coordinates of the jail and the coordinates were input to the Google map program. The red pin on Photo 9 is the location where the jail once stood.
Where to find it

*GONE* (razed and removed) The small jail building was located just east of the RR tracks and south of 12th St. The doors of the jail faced east and the Mail Pouch sign was on the north end facing 12th street. One end. Black background.
