Other Information
The entry is listed as still existing; however, 'Greatly Faded'. The current view available for the east end of the barn is a Google street view, dated Nov. 2016. Since the sign was greatly faded at that date it is unknown if it still exists at this entry update (Oct. 2022). Until the condition is verified the status will remain as noted.
This barn originally had a Mail Pouch sign on both sides. Originally it was assumed that a newer barn had been constructed around the existing sides, leaving the original signs in place but covering them up. This is not the case. The Ohio Dept of Transportation aerial photo archives have been researched for the dates 1950 - 2000. The earliest photos in the 1950's show that neither the barn nor the James A Rhodes Appalachian Hwy were in existance at that time. The earliest aerial photos (Oct. 1967 & Nov. 1968) show the barn in the exact footprint configuration and size that it is today (2022) see Photo 17. In addition, the 1967 & 68 photos clearly show that there were no Mail Pouch signs on the barn at those dates. The earliest ODOT photos showing the two Mail Pouch signs are dated Jan. 1971 (Photos 18 & 26) so it is probable that the signs were first painted on the barn in 1969 0r 1970. The barn siding was replaced prior to 1990 since by Feb. 1990 the ODOT photos show the present day Mail Pouch sign configuration on the east side of the barn (Photo 25); and, no Mail Pouch sign on the west side of the barn (Photo 30). During the residing, the original Mail Pouch signs were relocted to the east and west interior walls of the center section of the barn. Photos 19-24 show the original east side Mail Pouch sign relocated in to the interior east wall; and, Photos 27-29 show the original west side Mail Pouch sign relocated in to the interior west wall.
Where to find it Along the north side of OH-32/OH-124 (James A. Rhodes Appalachian Hwy.), east of US-23 by 5.0 miles. The barn is on the left side of the highway headed east from US-23. Prior to ca. 1990 the were two Mail Pouch signs on the barn one on the east side and one on the west side. After ca. 1990 the two original Mail Pouch signs were removed and relocated to an interior wall. From the date till today there has only been a Mail Pouch sign on the east side of the barn (see 'Other Information'). Black Backgrounds. Grealy faded.
