Not even the address in Photo 2 could help tie down the former location of this interesting old Mail Pouch Sign. The date '1867' is probably either the date that the building was built or the date that Jul. Heinemann's business was established, since it is too early for a Mail Pouch sign. Bloch Brothers began making stogies in 1879 as a side business to Samuel Bloch's wholesale grocery business. It was subsequent to that date that is was discovered that the cutting from the stogies could be flavored and packed into paper packages for chewing. The earliest Mail Pouch signs did not start to appear until ca. early 1890's.
North Silver street no longer exists. It is now known as North St. The section of North St. where the building once stood has been demolished and the area used for Residential and Commercial properties.
